CALIFORNIA JACKPOT SURGES TO $125 MILLION
2nd Largest Jackpot In California History

SACRAMENTO, February 12, 2002 -- Lottery officials announced the SuperLotto Plus jackpot for Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at $125 million. "This is a record-breaker! This is the second largest jackpot in California history," said Lottery Director Joan Wilson. "Players all over the state are buying tickets at a phenomenal pace and we have adjusted our estimate to $125 million based on that hot sales pace." California schools will receive about $74 million from the $125 million jackpot.

No one matched all six numbers for Saturday night's draw -- the winning numbers were 37, 8, 28, 22 and 43 and the MEGA number was 6. Sales for the noon hour today were more than $1.4 million, which is $23,000 per minute. Draw sales for this jackpot from Saturday to Wednesday are projected to reach approximately $80 million.

A single jackpot winner of $125 million would receive 26 annual payments with the first payment equaling approximately $3.1 million and the 26th payment being approximately $6.3 million before federal tax withholding. The estimated cash value of $62.5 million would equal roughly half of the jackpot, or the amount the Lottery would invest to payout the jackpot prize over 26 years. A retailer that sells a single winning ticket will receive a bonus of $625,000. In the event of the death of a winner, the full prize is paid to the estate of the winner. The current jackpot of $125 million is the second largest in the top ten California Lottery jackpots and the second single state jackpot in USA history. On June 23, 2001 the largest jackpot in California Lottery history reached $141 million and was won by a single winning ticket. Alcario Castellano of San Jose, California became the record-breaking highest individual jackpot winner of $141 million. On April 17, 1991, the California Lottery jackpot reached $118.8 million and was won by 10 winning tickets and 54 winners.

SuperLotto Plus can be played at more than 18,000 retail business establishments around the state. The SuperLotto Plus draw takes place each Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:58 p.m. Players may purchase tickets until 7:45 p.m. on the night of the draw.
