California Lottery SuperLottoPlus Jackpot Rises to $57 Million
14th Largest In California Lottery History
SACRAMENTO, July 30, 2001 -- You don't have to be the last survivor to win this Wednesday's SuperLotto Plus $57 million jackpot. Just match 5 of the 47 numbers drawn and one MEGA number from those drawn and you join the ranks of the California Lottery's SuperLotto Plus multi-million dollar winners. Lottery officials announced today, that the SuperLotto Plus jackpot for Wednesday, August 1, 2001 will be $57 million. "The SuperLotto Plus jackpot has risen to $57 million making this one of the top 15 in the California Lottery's history," said Lottery Director Joan Wilson. "As the jackpot grows, so does the contribution to public education."
The California Lottery currently has the largest single state lottery jackpot in the country. A single jackpot winner of $57 million would receive 26 annual payments with the first payment equaling approximately $1.4 million and the 26th payment being approximately $2.9 million before taxes. The estimated cash value would equal roughly half of the jackpot, $28.5 million or the amount the lottery would invest to payout the jackpot prize over 26 years. In the event of the death of a winner, the full prize is paid to the estate of the winner. A retailer who sells this winning ticket will receive a commission of one half of one percent of the prize or $285,000.
On June 23, 2001, the largest jackpot in California Lottery history reached $141 million and was won by Alcario Castellano who made Lottery history when he became the record-breaking highest individual jackpot winner.
With at least 34% of all Lottery sales going to education, the sales from this jackpot will generate an estimated $33 million for public education. The California Lottery ended the fiscal year 2000-2001 with estimated sales of $2.85 billion, making this the highest sales year in its history and with $1 billion in contributions to public schools in the state. California's schools have received approximately $13 billion from 34% of Lottery sales since 1985.
