SACRAMENTO, June 23, 2001 -- Lottery officials adjusted the estimate for tonight's SuperLotto Plus jackpot at $140 million. "It is the largest single-state jackpot in the nation's history," said Lottery Director Joan Wilson. "The sales pace is much higher than our original expectations!" Public schools in the state will receive about $80 million from the $140 million jackpot.
No one matched all six numbers for Wednesday night's draw -- the winning numbers were 2, 8, 31, 32, 46 and the MEGA number was 13. Sales for the noon hour today were more than $3.2 million between the 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. timeframe and $54,000 per minute. Draw sales (Wednesday after 7:45 p.m.-Saturday 7:45 p.m.) for this jackpot are projected to reach approximately $85 million.
A single jackpot winner of $140 million would receive 26 annual payments with the first payment equaling approximately $3.5 million and the 26th payment being approximately $7.1 million before a federal tax withholding of 28%. The estimated cash value of $70 million would equal roughly half of the jackpot or the amount the Lottery would invest to payout the jackpot prize over 26 years. A retailer that sells a single winning ticket will receive a bonus of $700,000. In the event of the death of a winner, the full prize is paid to the estate of the winner. On April 17, 1991, the California Lottery jackpot reached $118.8 million and was won by 10 winning tickets and 54 winners. Sang Cho of Moraga, California made Lottery history when she became the record-breaking highest individual jackpot winner of $89 million on March 3, 2001.
SuperLotto Plus can be played at more than 18,000 retail business establishments around the state. The SuperLotto Plus draw takes place each Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:58 p.m. Players may purchase tickets until 7:45 p.m. on the night of the draw.
