SACRAMENTO, May 31, 2001 -- California's First Lady Sharon Davis will present the California Lottery's "Heroes in Education" Award to the California Page Flippers. The award will be presented at Earl Warren Park, 5420 Lowell St., Sacramento, California, at 11:45 a.m. today. The event begins at 11:00 a.m. and is part of a daylong tour of the READ California Kids Advisory Council promoting recreational reading among school-age children.
First Lady Sharon Davis will present the "Heroes In Education" Award to the Page Flippers on behalf of the California Lottery at the unveiling and dedication of a new reading area at Earl Warren Park. Governor Gray Davis is scheduled to appear at the event to congratulate the statewide Page Flippers Advisory Council. The California Lottery's "Heroes in Education" Award recognizes the "unsung heroes" who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to volunteer their time and efforts to help California's public schools. The award is presented by a different celebrity guest presenter and airs on "The Big Spin" Show each month. Past celebrity presenters include actors Edward James Olmos, Caroline Rhea, Ricardo Montalban and sports celebrities Eric Dickerson and Dwight Hicks.
The 15 members of READ California's Kids Advisory Council are a part of the statewide campaign administered by the Governor's Office of the Secretary for Education to promote children improving their reading skills through recreational reading. The Page Flippers are comprised of 15 fourth through sixth-graders representing cities throughout California. The group encourages other children to read outside of the classroom and interact with other students to discuss obstacles to reading. Additionally, each member takes on a reading-related community improvement project.
