"Orlando Market" Named Lottery's July 2001 Retailer of the Month

SACRAMENTO -- The California Lottery announced Orlando Market in Stockton as California Lottery's Retailer of the Month for July, 2001. The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 3rd at 10:30 a.m. and it will be held at Orlando Market, 2201 South B Street in Stockton.

Orlando Market has total sales to date of more than $3.6 million and was one of the original retailers when the Lottery began in 1985. With a minimum of 34 percent of all Lottery ticket sales benefiting public education, Orlando Market has contributed more than $1.2 million to California's public schools. This store is the top selling Scratchers retailer in San Joaquin county.

Owner Sam Orlando treats his customers as family, remembers each of them by name, never refuses to cash tickets and carries all available games. Orlando also sponsors all his neighborhood schools' baseball and basketball teams and donates funds to his church.

The California Lottery sells its products through a network of more than 18,000 outlets statewide. The Lottery provides 52.7 percent of its revenues to players as prizes, 34.1 percent to public schools and 13.2 percent for administrative expenses, which includes 6.9 percent for retailer commissions. Since 1985, the Lottery has raised more than $12 billion for public schools. The California Lottery's contribution equals approximately 2 percent of the state's total education budget.
