Lillian Roney Receives "Hero in Education" Award Actress Merrilee McCommas Celebrity Presenter

SACRAMENTO - Actress Merrilee McCommas presented Lillian Roney with California Lottery's "Hero In Education" award on the "Big Spin® 2000" show that airs January 13, 2001.

At 78 years of age, Roney, a retired Teacher's Aid for the King City School District, continued her work in the local schools as a dedicated volunteer for 17 years. Roney dedicates up to four hours a day helping students learn reading, writing, art, science, and history.

Outside of volunteering at school, Mrs. Roney and her husband are active in the "Friends of the Library" program. This program is aimed at using differing fundraising techniques to raise money for libraries with cut state budgets. In the years she has been involved in the program, the group has raised money for new books and materials for the library. They also raised money to have the library repainted.

Actress Merrilee McCommas, who portrays Patricia on Family Law, presented Roney with the "Hero in Education" award. "Education is the key to everything," said McCommas.

California Lottery's "Heroes in Education" Program recognizes outstanding volunteers in the community. Through their dedication and efforts, California's students receive enrichment opportunities that may not have been available without these volunteers. The "Heroes in Education" Program exemplifies that support for California's schools comes in many different and innovative ways. Since 1985, the Lottery has raised more than $12 billion for public schools.
