SACRAMENTO -- California Lottery's "Big Spin® 2000" show airs Saturday, September 23, 2000, in twelve television markets statewide. Contestants on this week's show won a total of $2,197,000.

The California Lottery will announce the newest "Extravaganza 2000" winner on this week's show. The winner will receive $2,000 per week for the next 20 years, which totals over $2 million.

Modesto resident Carman King was presented California Lottery's "Hero in Education" award. King has been volunteering to help students for many years. She is the charter president of the Parent Teachers Students Association (PTSA), a community service group she formed through Beyer High School, that gives children the opportunity to volunteer encouraging them to get involved in their community. A few of the events King has coordinated for the children have been Safe-n-Sane Holloween, Stanislaus Count Red Ribbon Week, Underprivileged Children's Christmas Tour, Earth Day, and two television programs against drug and alcohol use, to name a few. Actor/comedian, Jimmie "JJ" Walker, presented King with the award.

Irene Demboski of La Mesa became this week's spinner by purchasing her first "Big Spin" Scratchers®. Demboski won $75,000 and plans to put the money she won towards retirement.

California Gold contestants won a combined total of $42,500. Storeowner Hardial Chumber of Modesto was the top winner with $20,000. Chumber plans to spend his prize money on his children and to pay bills.

The California Lottery sells its products through a network of more than 18,000 outlets statewide. The Lottery provides 52.5 percent of its revenues to players as prizes, 34 percent to public schools and 14 percent for administrative expenses, which include 6.8 percent for retailer commissions. Since 1985, the Lottery has raised more than $11 billion for public schools. The California Lottery's contribution equals approximately 2 percent of the state's total education budget.
