California Lottery SuperLotto Jackpot Rises to $55 Million For Chinese New Year 2000-Year of the Dragon Celebration
SACRAMENTO, February 17, 2000 -- Lottery officials announced the SuperLotto jackpot for Saturday February 19, 2000 at $55 million. "The SuperLotto jackpot has risen to $55 million as the Year of the Dragon is ushered in to celebrate Chinese New Year ," said Commission Chairman Dave Rosenberg. "The best news is that public schools will receive nearly $30 million from the draw sales associated with this jackpot."
The California Lottery currently has the largest single-state lottery jackpot in the country. A single jackpot winner of $55 million would receive 26 annual payments with the first payment equaling approximately $1.375 million and the 26th payment being approximately $2.8 million before taxes. The estimated cash value would equal roughly half of the jackpot, $27 million or the amount the lottery would invest to payout the jackpot prize over 26 years. In the event of the death of a winner, the full prize is paid to the estate of the winner.
On April 17, 1991, the largest jackpot in California Lottery history reached $118.8 million and was won by 10 winning tickets and 54 winners. Salvador Gonzalez of Anaheim, California made Lottery history when he became the record-breaking highest individual jackpot winner of $87 million on June 9, 1999.
With at least 34% of all Lottery sales going to education, the sales from this jackpot (which has rolled 5 times since February 2, 2000) will generate an estimated $30 million for public education.
SuperLotto can be played at more than 18,000 retail business establishments around the state. The SuperLotto draw takes place each Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:58 p.m. Players may purchase tickets until 7:45 p.m. on the night of the draw.
A lucky winner who bought their ticket at 7-Eleven, 11656 Wilshire Blvd. In Los Angeles has yet to claim their $25 million jackpot from January 8, 2000. That lucky winner's ticket can be claimed at a local district office.
