Fantasy 5 Winner Takes A Chance And Wins Big

SACRAMENTO, July 10, 1999 -- The new California Lottery's "Big Spin® 2000" show airs Saturday July 10, 1999 in twelve television markets statewide. Contestants on this week's show won a total of $200,000.

Dolores Barber, a food server from Covina made a fantasy come true playing California Lottery's Fantasy 5TM game. For the past two years, Barber had given her Fantasy 5 tickets away to friends instead of mailing them in because she hadn't felt very lucky lately. One day she decided to give it a chance, she sent in one ticket and her name was drawn. "My luck runs in streaks," said Barber. Now, Barber is $85,000 richer! Barber plans to invest in stocks, bonds and put some money in the bank. "…I'm also going to give my daughter $5,000 towards a car and keep some of my prize money for my niece and I to spend," said Barber.

Antonio Urbina gave his son $3.00 to buy one ticket and told him to spend the rest of the money on another item. He forgot to buy the other item and spent the $3.00 on Fame & Fortune Scratchers®. The third ticket he bought for his father was a winner. Urbina, an auto body technician from Bakersfield, won $32,500 and plans to open up a business with his family.

"I'm going to be doing a little fixing up around our home and share some of the money with my daughter," said Frank Newton, a retired printer from Fremont. Newton was the top California Gold winner on this week's show winning $30,000.

Alfredo Luna from Los Angeles spun the largest prize wheel in the world after getting three "SPIN" symbols on his Scratchers. Luna spun the wheel to win $30,000.

The California Lottery sells its products through a network of more than 18,000 outlets statewide. The Lottery provides 52 percent of its revenues to players as prizes, 34 percent to public schools, and 14 percent for administrative expenses, which includes 6.8 percent for retailer commissions. Since 1985, the Lottery has raised more than $10 billion for public schools and has provided an annual average of approximately 38 percent of the Lottery's total revenues to schools. The California Lottery's contribution equals approximately 2 percent of the state's total education budget. "Big Spin® 2000" is the longest running Lottery game show in the country, airing continuously since 1985.
