SuperLotto Jackpot Rises To $65 Million California Lottery Jackpot Largest in the Nation

SACRAMENTO -- Lottery officials announced the SuperLotto jackpot for Wednesday June 9, 1999 at $65 million. "The California Lottery's jackpot is the largest in the country, even larger than the multi-state lotteries," said Lottery Commission Chairman Dan Apodaca. "This will certainly be a boost to our education contribution to public schools. They will receive more than $36 million from this jackpot alone."

A single jackpot winner of $65 million would receive 26 annual payments with the first payment equaling approximately $1.6 million and the 26th payment being approximately $3.3 million before taxes. The estimated cash value would equal roughly half of the jackpot, $32.5 million or the amount the lottery would invest to payout the jackpot prize over 26 years. In the event of the death of a winner, the full prize is paid to the estate of the winner.

On April 17, 1991, the largest jackpot in California Lottery history reached $118.8 million and was won by 10 winning tickets and 54 winners. Augustine Chiarenza of Lompoc, California made Lottery history when he became the record-breaking highest individual jackpot winner of $51.6 million on June 18, 1994.

SuperLotto can be played at more than 18,000 retail business establishments around the state. The SuperLotto draw takes place each Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:58 p.m. Players may purchase tickets until 7:45 p.m. on the night of the draw.
