“Lucky Penny” Game Proves Lucky for All Three Contestants
SACRAMENTO – The California Lottery’s new TV game show, “Make Me a Millionaire,” awarded more than $251,500 in cash and prizes to 12 contestants this week.
This episode was especially exciting for those contestants playing “Lucky Penny” – the game in which contestants don’t compete against each other, but each have the chance to win the top prize. This week, “Lucky Penny” awarded all three contestants with its top prize, a brand new car!
The three new car owners cheered each other on and celebrated their wins together. Marc Leeger, a custom car builder from Beaumont, won’t have to rebuild his new car. “I once built a 1965 Falcon and a photo of it was published in a car magazine. That was exciting, but not as exciting as winning a new car,” explained Leeger. Thick Chin, a retiree from Berkeley, came to the show wanting a new car and he got his wish. Liz Martinez, a housewife from Rialto, has been married 30 years and wanted to buy her husband a new truck, but won’t have to since they won a new car.
Other contestants included data software specialist Patrick Kennedy from Arroyo Grande and Raquel Gonzalez, a medical assistant from Oxnard, who won $46,000. Kennedy walked away with $80,000 and says he will use his prize to buy his wife a nice, fancy roadster.

More than 95 cents of every Lottery dollar is returned to the community in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retail commissions. The California Lottery contributes at least 34 cents of every dollar that players spend on Lottery products to public education and returns more than 50 percent of sales to players in the form of prizes. Since its inception in 1985, the Lottery has contributed nearly $21 billion to California schools out of total sales of more than $56 billion. Retailers benefit too, earning $3.6 billion in compensation since 1985.
