Daily 3

FAQs

Answers to your Daily 3 questions.

How is the prize calculated for a Straight/Box play?

When you make a Straight/Box wager, your $1 wager is divided equally between the Straight and the Box playstyles. This means you can win either by matching your three numbers in the exact order (the Straight wager) or by matching all three winning numbers in any order (the Box wager).

For example if you play 1-2-3 for Straight/Box and the winning numbers are 1-2-3, you would win both the Straight AND the Box wagers. If the Straight prize for that drawing was $500 and the Box prize for that drawing was $200 you would win half the Straight prize, or $250, PLUS half the Box prize, or $100, for a total of $350.

Can I choose my playstyle using Quick Pick®?

Yes, but if you don't ask for a specific playstyle you will automatically receive the Straight playstyle.

How do I get the most from least-played numbers?
A pari-mutuel prize structure means players' winnings are determined by what numbers they play and the total number of players. For example: Most players frequently play the same popular numbers such as 777. If 777 were to be drawn the prize for that draw would be divided between all of the players who played 777. On the other hand if a player were to play less popular numbers and those numbers were drawn, he or she would share the prize amount with fewer winners. With this in mind, you might want to try playing less popular numbers as they just might be your ticket to bigger prizes. Find number frequency »
Are prizes taxable?

All prizes over $599 are subject to taxes and other offsets required by law.  However, there are no California state/local taxes.

How is the Daily 3 draw conducted?

The draws are conducted using an Automated Draw Machine, which is a state-of-the-art computer used to draw winning numbers.

The Automated Draw Machine is a stand-alone computer, which means it isn't connected to any other computer system. The computer's hard drive cannot be opened without breaking a numbered security seal. Inside the computer, the programs that generate the random numbers are permanently implanted or "burned in" and cannot be altered. You could compare it to trying to alter the information on a compact disk. Tampering with the system in any way is impossible.

The California Lottery has purchased three separate Automated Draw Machines, two are used for the daily draws and the third one is used as an off-site backup in the event of an emergency. Each day before the draw, a manual capsule draw is conducted to determine which draw device will be used - A or B. Another manual capsule draw is conducted to determine which randomization method is used, one being a mathematical algorithm and the other being a Random Number Generator. The numbers selected from either method are unpredictable and selected in an unbiased manner.

How long do I have to collect a Daily 3 prize?

You have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim your prize.
What are the odds of winning a prize in Daily 3?

The odds of winning depend on playstyle: The odds for a Straight play are 1 in 1,000; the odds for a Box play are 1 in 333; the odds for a Straight/Box are 1 in 333. Find all winning variations and odds »
What happens to a Daily 3 prize if it is not claimed?

If a jackpot prize is not claimed within the required time limit, the unclaimed Daily 4 prize funds are distributed to California public education.
