Lottery Logo Scams:
Recently, a number of consumers have received letters or emails using the California Lottery, SuperLotto and Mega Millions name and logo. These letters and emails claim that you have won a prize and request that you contact the listed representative to find out how to claim your prize or send fake checks to help cover fees and taxes. These are all scams and they are attempting to gain access to your personal information, such as Social Security number or bank account numbers and attempting to steal your money.
The Security/Law Enforcement Division advises that the California Lottery does not notify winners via email or any other method when an official lottery prize is won. Winners must contact the California Lottery when there is a winning ticket. Each individual who wins a lottery jackpot prize must file a claim with the California Lottery Headquarters to receive his or her winning prize.
The California Lottery does not require an upfront payment for fees or taxes and does not schedule payment by “money order”, “certified cheque” or offer checks listing a different company or state to offset fees or taxes.
If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is! These con artists have no problem taking your money or using your personal information.
The California Lottery Security/Law Enforcement Division advises consumers not to respond to these suspicious correspondences.
People have lost money in this type of scam and have jeopardized their personal and financial information by responding to these fraudulent claims.
Please be aware that these are only a few of the fraudulent letters circulating today. If you have any questions regarding a letter received thru the mail, contact the California Lottery Security/Law Enforcement Division at 1-800- LOTTERY or 1-800-568-8379.
